A sensory overload of golden-era goodness – how many of these joints can you remember?

New Joints – Freeway / Consequence / A.P.

Freeway – “Still Got Love” (Roc-A-Fella)

I know that Freeway is something of an acquired taste to many with his over-excited rhyme style and constant ad-libs, but I’ve always been partial to his unique brand of east coast street-hop. If you didn’t pick up his 2003 debut album “Philadelphia Freeway” then you missed out on one of that year’s best major label releases. To me, this particular Roc Boy possesses what so many of today’s artists lack – personality and character on the mic. “Still Got Love” is from Freeway’s imminent album “Free At Last”.

Consequence – “Breakfast Of Champions” (G.O.O.D. Music)

Lifted from the former A Tribe Called Quest affiliate’s latest DJ Whoo Kid-hosted mix-CD “The Cons Vol. 5”, this snappy freestyle over Gang Starr’s “Skills” instrumental is further proof that Consequence’s debut album “Don’t Quit Your Day Job” deserved more attention than it received when released earlier this year (and is it just me who thinks Kanye West owes this dude for the part he seems to have played in influencing Mr. College Dropout’s lyrical steez? Maybe that’s why he gave him a record deal?). Also, when did they start giving guns away as free gifts in cereal boxes? It was always a cheap plastic toy or a fake tattoo transfer back when I was a youngster.

A.P. – “Keep Trying” (All Bets Down Entertainment)

Smooth, reflective rhymes from this New Jersey-based newcomer with Naughty By Nature connections (based around a hefty chunk of Groove Theory’s 1995 soul cut of the same name). Nice tune, but I think you’ll agree that the bonus track snippet at the end of the video kinda kills the mood.
