At its worst, musical experimentation can be self-indulgent and directionless. At its best, that same desire an artist has to think outside the box can result in a sonic experience that is both captivating and intriguing. Edinburgh-based producer Brelstaff has earned himself a place in the latter category with this self-titled release.
An eclectic collection of styles, ranging from gentle, soul-coated head-nod flavour (“Your Life”) to dreamy jazz (“Awareness”) and soothing, late-night breakbeat gems (“Nobody”), “Brelstaff” is the sound of an accomplished individual who clearly has much more to offer.
