Extra Prolific – “First Sermon” (Jive / 1994)
1994 was arguably Hip-Hop’s best year musically since the golden-era pinnacle of 1988, with debut albums from the likes of Nas, Biggie, Jeru The Damaja, Keith Murray, O.C. and Kurious all causing mass hysteria amongst rap junkies. Hieroglyphics affiliates Extra Prolific also dropped their first (and only) album that year, the sublime ”Like It Should Be”, which mixed macked-out Oakland trunk funk with smooth jazzy soundscapes and slick lyricism.
Dwarfed at the time by the hype surrounding instant classics such as “Illmatic” and “Ready To Die”, “Like It Should Be” is often overlooked when talk turns to the soundtrack of the 1-9-9-4, but definitely deserves its place alongside the many great albums released that year.
